It was the first time Leeteuk had a chance to relax in a while. He laid on his bed, looking up at the ceiling fan, watching it spin and timing his breathing with the sounds of the squeaks it made as it went around and around. The laughter of Donghae, Sungmin, and the others echoed in his ears and he wished he had the energy to join them. However, after filming We Got Married all day, he was too tired to do anything.
“Yah, ahjussi, you’re gonna overwork yourself,” said a voice out of nowhere.
Leeteuk turned his head to the side and saw Heechul. Yes, Kim Heechul. He had been “talking” to Heechul since he left for the military. Call him insane all you want, but as of now, it was his only stress reliever.
He chuckled. “You keep saying that.”
“Well, it’s true,” Heechul sighed back. “You’ve gotta learn to do this more often,” he said as he stretched and put his arms in back of his head.
“Do what?”
“Relax. It’ll help you.”
“I am relaxing, babo.”
“For the first time in like 2 months. Come on, Jungsu.”
Leeteuk smiled at that. Heechul always called him Jungsu when they were alone. It made him remember he wasn’t a celebrity all the time. It made him feel like he was a real person.
“Well, as you may remember, I never have time to relax anymore. With preparations for the sixth album, Kyuhyun and his musical, Sungmin and Wookie doing KTR, I have to make sure everyone’s okay. It’s my job.”
“What about you?”
Leeteuk looked at Heechul.
“What did you say?”
“I said, what about you?” Heechul poked his hyungs shoulder. “Have you been taking care of yourself? Making sure you get enough rest?”
“The members are more important than I am.”
Heechul sighed. “You know what hyung? You always fucking say that. You’ve always put so much pressure on yourself that you drive yourself insane. When Kangin had his problems, you went into the CEOs office every day to try to get them to let him stay. Trying to get them to give him a schedule, anything. And when he chose to go into the army you refused to believe it. When Kibummie left you held a meeting with all of us saying that no matter what happens, you would take the blame for if any criticism was thrown our way…”
“I didn’t want people to think we were breaking apart. People needed to know how strong we ar-“
“Yah, let me finish!”
Leeteuk kept his mouth shut. He knew better than to interrupt Heechul more than once during a rant.
“When Han Geng made the decision to go, you all but tied him to a chair. “Please, Han Geng, I’ll make it better. Whatever I can do, I can make it better.” You offered to cook Chinese food for the whole year, you were gonna call his mom and ask for the recipes.”
Leeteuk looked down, thankful that Heechul hadn’t mentioned the long nights after Geng had left. The crying, the motivational conversations that usually ended with the younger making fun of the eldest. That’s what Leeteuk had missed most about his dongsaeng, his ability to cheer him up in the weirdest ways.
“The members are my life, Chul. Without them I have nothing at all to live for.”
“What are you going to do when you have to go into the a-“
“Shut up Heechul.”
“Jungsu you have to realize that it-“
“Shut up.”
“You have to do two years!”
“I SAID SHUT UP!” Leeteuk shouted as he rose from his bed. “I know I have to go, it’s killing me. What am I supposed to do without the variety shows, the performances?”
Tears filled his eyes as he stared at his dongsaeng.
“On that stage, on those TV sets, it’s where I feel alive Heechul. I’ve dreamed of being famous since I was young. It was my escape. I’m not giving that up. I will put it off as long as I can, I will not leave where I feel special!”
Heechul stood up and walked toward him.
“Hyung, you’re so much stronger than you think you are. You can do this, we both know you can.”
Leeteuk wiped his eyes.
“Is training…really as hard as some people say it is?”
“Hyung,” Heechul chuckled. “Do you remember the training we went through when we first started out? It’s no worse than that, just with guns.”
Leeteuk laughed and looked up. “I miss you, Heechul
“Oh hush hyung, you sound like a girl,” he replied as he pulled his hyung into his arms for a hug. “By the way, Wookie’s gonna be here in a second.”
“What?”
There was no reply as a knock shocked Leeteuk back into reality. He looked around only to find Heechul was gone.
“Hyung? Are you okay?” Came Ryeowooks’ voice from the other side of the door.
“Be right there!” Leeteuk shouted as he scrambled to fix his bed before opening the door to find a worried face staring at him.
“A-are you okay? I heard you talking to yourself, just making sure everything’s okay…”
He patted his dongsaengs shoulder. “Don’t worry Wookie, I’m fine. Just…thinking out loud you know?”
Ryeowook nodded. “I made you food, you looked tired when you walked in.”
“Thanks, I’ll be right there.”
Ryeowook made his way toward the kitchen as Leeteuk turned around to close his door. He saw Heechul lying on his bed, and before he could close it all the way Heechul shouted “Don’t get fat hyung!”
____________
It was a hot and muggy night in late August. Leeteuk was sitting against his headboard in his boxers, watching the time tick away on the clock.
2:45
2:46
2:47
In 7 hours, he would be making his way to the army base, where he would begin his two years of mandatory service.
No more variety shows.
2:50
No more standing on stages.
2:51
No more listening to the fanchants that caused his skin to set on fire.
2:52
Breathe in and out, Jungsu, he said to himself.
“Yah hyung, calm down.”
He closed his eyes and looked at the ceiling as Heechuls’ voice filled the room.
“It’ll be okay, Jungsu, you know it will be.”
He choked back his tears. No more crying. You’ve done that enough tonight.
“I-I don’t want to go, Heechul.”
“No one wants to go. You just need to get it over with. It’s going to be alright.”
The eldest covered his face and sighed.
“You need to rest.”
“I don’t want to.”
“You’re being really childish.”
“So what?”
Heechul punched his hyungs arm.
“You think I don’t miss it? I do, every single day. But this is what we have to do. This is required for us. It’s two years and then you’re done. This will all be waiting for you when you come back. No one will forget Super Junior, and no one will forget you.”
Leeteuk rubbed his eyes and relaxed.
“I know, I know. I just…” He looked around the room at all the presents fans had given him over the years. The concert gear, the photo shoots he’d been a part of. Memorabilia from everywhere they’ve gone as a family. He looked at Heechul.
“Since you’ll be back earlier, will y-“
“I’ll take care of them, Jungsu. You know I will.”
They both looked at the clock.
3:16
“A little less than 5 hours,” Heechul stated. “You need to sleep now.”
Leeteuk laid down as Heechul stood up and watched his hyung.
“Good luck Heechul.”
“Same to you. Don’t break a hip or anything out there, ahjussi.”
Leeteuk laughed silently and threw a pillow at Heechul. He caught it and threw it back at him before making his way towards the door.
“I’ll see you soon.” Heechul comforted.
Leeteuk nodded before closing his eyes.
Tomorrow it starts.
Tomorrow the new chapter in his career would begin.
Oddly enough, it didn’t seem that scary anymore.

He tried to drown out the screams of “Leeteuk-oppa, stay safe!” and “We’ll miss you!” as he walked away from both the members, the fans, and the sapphire blue banners with his name on them.
As he opened the door to the military office, everyone inside turned to look at him making his way to the front desk. He bowed and smiled at everyone, trying to ignore the faint shouts behind him.
“Name?” the man at the desk asked as he clicked a pen and prepared to write.
“Leet-” he began, stopping himself as he realized what he was saying.
“Sir, I’m going to need your n-“
“Jungsu,” he started over. “My name is Park Jungsu.”

This was beautifully written. Thank you so much :)
